Azabu House enjoys a luxurious natural setting, with the residence housed in a building constructed in 1988, hidden within a quiet residential neighborhood of Nishi-Azabu, Tokyo.

As the fourth case study project by Japanese furniture brand Karimoku Case Study, Azabu House was conceived through close collaboration between Norm Architects and Keiji Ashizawa Design. The exquisite new wooden furniture pieces within the residence were created as part of this comprehensive renovation project.

The building housing the residence occupies a spacious and ventilated plot – a rarity in contemporary Tokyo. The greenery surrounding the entrance, meticulously maintained by gardeners, welcomes visitors harmoniously, establishing a sense of tranquility and connection with nature within the city’s heart.

Similar to previous case studies, Azabu House integrates Japanese and Scandinavian design principles and aesthetics. Shared convictions about using natural materials and muted color palettes form the project’s foundation, characterized by an emphasis on tactility, softness, simplicity, and timeless qualities.

The angular joints connecting the cross-sections of each table leg impart structural elegance while supporting the tabletop, eliminating the need for aprons. When placed in a setting, the wooden table appears to effortlessly interact with its surroundings, elevating the space’s atmosphere. Despite its scale, the table maintains a light and discreet presence, allowing the organic forms of surrounding chairs to stand out.

This bench is designed for versatility, providing comfortable seating while maintaining aesthetic suitability as a display shelf. Thin edges of the seat and legs lend lightness and distinctiveness, while the cross-stretcher connects to the seat with slender steel rods – visually and functionally unifying the structure to create holistic harmony.

Azabu House was designed by Norm Architects shortly after their Americas trip. Inspiration from American Mid-Century and Brazilian Modernism manifests through warm dark natural materials, wood-paneled walls, lush carpets, and tactile interiors – here translated into a new dark-toned iteration of Japanese & Scandinavian interior design.
