Tsinghua University, founded in 1911, has, over more than a century, nurtured countless intellectuals and visionaries. Throughout various historical periods and arenas, these individuals have made outstanding contributions to the nation's prosperity with their wisdom and courage. Today, Tsinghua stands as a dream for Chinese students and a world-leading university. It continuously cultivates top talents to meet national strategic demands and advance the forefront of global scholarship. Among these are very a few esteemed international scholars returning to teach, mirroring the legacy of figures like Liang Sicheng, Qian Zhongshu and Qian Sanqiang, achieving remarkable success in both education and academia.

The current client is such an esteemed talent, enriched by her undergraduate years at Tsinghua before pursuing advanced studies abroad. With deep affection, she chose to return to Tsinghua to teach after earning a PhD from a leading university overseas. In the summer of 2024, she and her husband reached out to us, seeking our help in transforming an old apartment.

Located a five-minute walk from Tsinghua University's west gate, the apartment building is a typical 1980s red-brick structure, retaining the marks of time. The client shared their vision for the new home: first, it should accommodate the family’s plans for the next decade; second, it must serve as a shelter for daily life, as well as a place for study and work; lastly, it should have a connection to Tsinghua.

To understand this better, we scheduled a visit to Tsinghua University’s campus to immerse ourselves in its deep historical legacy. Among all the buildings, the Old Library, one of Tsinghua’s early “Four Great Buildings,” left a lasting impression, embodying the collective wisdom of both Chinese and foreign architects. The East Wing of the Old Library was designed by American architect Henry Murphy in 1916 and completed in the spring of 1919, showcasing a classic European style. The central hall and West Wing were designed by alumnus Yang Tingbao and finished in November 1931, seamlessly blending with the East Wing. It was once the owner's favorite place to study and read. This legendary library became the primary source of inspiration for us. Our goal was to evoke cherished campus memories throughout, creating a private sanctuary that would continue to inspire two outstanding scholars.

We removed all the lightweight walls and stripped away the thick layers on the red brick walls, revealing its original texture, which provided a clear basis for optimizing the layout. The new materials, with their two distinct textures, were inspired by the gray washed stone and beige marble of the Old Library. Through elaborate segmentation and combination, we shaped new geometries and spaces that conveyed both a sense of history and strength, where the red brick walls and new partitions were hidden. Throughout the space, the presence of traditional doors is barely felt. All the openings are “naturally” formed by the different geometries, creating a harmonious flow. The upper parts on the walls are painted white, creating a material separation that visually enhances the sense of support beneath. Their unified height subtly suggests a library-like sense of order.

The original dining area was cramped and disorganized, a place you'd rather not linger. The renovated dining area, however, has become a center of connectivity and sight. Two small openings on the north side lead to the bathroom and kitchen. The uniform beige texture gives the impression that these two spaces were "carved" from a single stone. The floor tiles further enhance the sense of age, making them feel like the earliest "carved" areas. A mirror is cleverly embedded in the east wall, creating a sense of depth in the eastern view.

On the south side, two slightly larger openings lead to the living room and master bedroom. Rather than a living room, this space is more of a study. We learned that, in addition to their daily work at the university, the owners often complete substantial research at home, sometimes collaborating together. As a result, we designed a multifunctional storage system inspired by the large wooden tables of the Old Library, capable of both book storage and long hours of reading and writing. This system seamlessly integrates with the other geometries and lines, with the long wooden table seemingly "growing" from the west wall, simple and unified. The overhead pendant light can be freely adjusted for height and length to accommodate their different scenarios. The east wall is painted a subtle green, complemented by carefully selected artwork and classic stainless steel furniture, adding liveliness to the serene space. The original balcony and living room were open to each other, with a low structural block that could not be removed. By adding a lightweight window, we provided a vertical line to the awkward F-shaped opening, making it visually more coherent; this also helps keep everyday clutter on the balcony, creating a cleaner appearance. Beyond the living room doorway to the north lies a small bedroom to accommodate parents for short stays and meet future children's preschool needs.

Unlike the neutral tones of other spaces, the master bedroom is enveloped in a soft lotus pink on three sides, creating a warmer, more intimate atmosphere. The storage system and bed "naturally" blend into the whole, blurring the boundaries between walls and cabinets, echoing the living room's design concept. Their daily clothing is separately organized on the left and right sides of the bed, while the back and underside continue to offer significant storage space. The southwest corner makeup area is a personal haven for the owner, shedding the identity of a Tsinghua University teacher to just be a girl who loves beauty. The small ink painting on the wall and the plant patterns on the cushion, together with the classic MCM teak table and walnut chair, form a delicate balance.

NA-DECO, with its meticulous approach, has transformed the dilapidated old apartment into a humble and bright scholar's residence. It gently whispers of the vibrant undergraduate years at Tsinghua University, while nurturing the promising future of its owners.
