After more than one hundred years of historical evolution, China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region has become a place of multi-ethnic cohabitation. Influenced by the Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China, the Han Chinese population in Shandong, Shanxi and Hebei gradually migrated here, which not only led to the transformation of the urbanization of the animal husbandry areas, but also further deepened the cultural exchanges and ethnic integration. Against this background, the vast land of Inner Mongolia has given birth to countless 1+1 families such as Mongolian-Chinese, Manchu-Chinese, Hui-Chinese, etc., and has continuously iterated different forms of subcultures.

This time, NA-DECO Design was commissioned by the Mongolian-Chinese 1+1 families to create a new design for a flat-story house in Hohhot. The man of the house is from Shandong and the woman of the house is a native Mongolian, who share a love of traditional Chinese culture and a deep attachment to their hometown. Drawing inspiration from this, NAMOHAN BREEZE has created a modern and elegant literati painting using traditional Chinese colors as the main pigments and sharp structural lines as the frame.

The symmetrical layout and the smoky red background of the entrance hall, where you pass through a foyer before stepping into the living room, sets an oriental tone that contrasts with the bright living room that you are about to enter, an approach that is influenced by traditional Chinese literature and inspired by the design techniques used by Adolf Loos in the MÜLLER residence. The living room, which is almost 8 meters wide, is arranged on a uniform east-west axis with a coffee table and a sofa, where the man drinks tea and paints, and where the woman relaxes and entertains guests, surrounded by two chairs and a sofa. In the middle of the living room, a set of stainless steel bookshelf is customized for the owner, and its shape is inspired by the Mongolian bow and arrow, the new combination of traditional shape and modern materials injects youthful vitality into the new home. The floor is made of dark brown tiles with wood grain, the faint luster of which resembles the brown-glazed porcelain of the Han and Tang dynasties, which becomes the understated and rustic color of this new home.

The overall spatial layout is defined by two sets of wooden walls at the center, whose T-shaped structure separates the second bedroom and living/master bedroom in the east-west direction, and the living room and dining/storage space in the north-south direction, which not only carries a variety of storage functions, but also balances the spatial rhythm and visual experience. The dining/kitchen space is located on the north side of the T-shaped structure, and the huge center island and the tea table echo each other and are located on the same axis, forming an ambiguous relationship with the living room. In order to imitate the color and texture of celadon porcelain, which flourished for several dynasties, the kitchen cabinets and floor cabinets are customized in two colors, soy green and winter green, and are finished with soft lacquer. Another T-shaped structure formed by the cabinets and living room curtains reinforces the solidity of the space.

Pushing open the door with traditional Mongolian motifs, you enter the bedrooms at the east and west ends of the room, the second bedroom on the east side and the master bedroom on the west side. The second bedroom is not overly decorated, a bed, a chair, a lamp and a shelf are all that is here, all conveying the simple and humble philosophy of life of the host and hostess. The cabinets on the left and right sides of the master bedroom echo the two sets of wooden walls in the living room, and the wide bed is located in the center. The lacquered sideboard with mountain peaks is still customized for the owner, and the peaks not only suggest the name of the hostess, but also the host's nostalgia for his native Shandong.

This project is NA-DECO Design's attempt to implant two-dimensional traditional aesthetics in a three-dimensional space, like the Qingming Shanghe Tu, which is a continuous and vivid scene of life as far as the eye can see. Mongolian and Chinese cultures have the same roots and origins, and in the long river of history, they keep separating and converging, and every 1+1 family is a beating note, which is written into the great hymn of national integration.
