Daytrip worked with architectural firm Studio 30 to extend the first floor of this Victorian rowhouse toward the rear and side of the building to increase the usable space inside, while digging down to raise ceiling heights for a more stately feel, while the interior spaces are a juxtaposition of curved, organic forms and clean minimalism.

In increasing the interior space, the design team has reduced elemental features of the space that are characteristic of the past era - such as skirting, arches and paneling - and the design team, Daytrip, also saw this as an opportunity to realize a new aesthetic.

The design team placed a 1970s vintage Gilda sofa by Michel Ducaroy in the living space, as well as a sinuous Z dining chair upholstered in beige mohair velvet by Gastone Rinaldi, a combination of furnishings used to juxtapose a clean, crisp aesthetic with more organic forms. The design team also replaced standard doorways with large, full-height openings that give a sense of flow throughout the home, which Daytrip's Halstead explains, “bring more daylight into the home and connect the different spaces together.”

“The contrast between the gallery-like minimalism and the organic forms piqued the client's interest and we decided to explore this”, says Daytrip's Halstead. The owners, a young professional couple, decided to move the kitchen to the front portion of the building rather than the traditional back portion of the building. The kitchen features a monolithic marble island that is both understated and sculptural, designed to fit comfortably into the wider living space.

The minimalist palette also includes wide oak panels, which are used on the second floor upstairs.Daytrip's Halstead says: “Wood brings a natural warmth and character that is often needed to complement the rustic qualities of concrete”, and oak's soft, honeyed tones are a calming neutral hue that is easily adaptable to all spaces.

“During the design process, we looked to Andrée Putman's design style and discussed how we could incorporate black elements into the design,” says Daytrip Director Emily Potter, paying tribute to the late French interior designer. “We had the opportunity to accentuate the sculptural feel with a single color block design and felt that the house could be a relaxed, welcoming mix with the spirited feel of a London townhome.”
