This home, a refurbished five-storey Victorian townhouse in Clapton, North East London, UK, was designed by London-based interior design firm Daytrip Studio, which has a systematic design programme through which it creates flawless and stylish interiors.

The eternal struggle of townhouse design is often its limited exposure to natural light, Daytrip Studio overcame this by adding light wells and openings to the existing building in the hope that the light would reach from the attic on the top floor down to the basement, the new light wells increase the penetration of natural light as much as possible so that clever openings allow the light to reach every room and touch every surface.

The space boasts a bespoke kitchen in beautiful Douglas fir and honed Evora marble, and its tonal subtlety and minimalist ease are reflected in the landscaped gardens designed by Lauren Finch's Tyler Goldfinch.

Daytrip Studio's refurbishment honoured the house's Victorian charm and treated the original fabric with care and simplicity. Decorative cornices and original flooring that existed before the house was renovated were carefully restored, openings between rooms were widened and minimalist steel doors by Crittal were installed.

In terms of the overall colour palette of the interiors, Daytrip Studio chose to embrace the beautiful colour beige, and while being labelled as beige may seem like a generalisation, in this case it deserves praise and applause. From the Douglas fir timber and honed Evora marble to the lime-washed walls and off-white powder-coated metalwork, warm materials are used throughout the house, with Daytrip Studio's design team explaining that ‘the clever continuity of materials and finishes helps to make the transition between old and new’.

The space looks effortless and unpretentious, with a subtle atmosphere of sophistication and complexity, which reflects the design team's talent and mastery of materials, colour palette and the residence's position between vintage and contemporary. The interior as a whole is imbued with a sense of sophistication and calm ambience, while the materials used successfully combine the soothing elegance of craftsmanship with the clean polish of modernism.
