House Los Tigres &
Located in Nuevo Vallarta, a seaside town on Mexico's west coast, House Los Tigres was designed to reflect the country's distinctive pro-nature design language and created by César Béjar Studio in collaboration with architect Fernando Sánchez.
Nuevo Vallarta's warm climate eliminates the need for air conditioning for half the year, allowing the building to be open to the outdoors. During the other half of the year, the surrounding landscape is refreshed by the high temperatures and humidity of the area and the lush vegetation. In this climate, César Béjar and Fernando Sánchez decided to combine the proportions of the indoor and outdoor spaces in an even manner and to make a graceful transition between the two zones of the front and backyard by means of partial spaces.
In addition to responding to the climate, César Béjar and Fernando Sánchez incorporated typical local architectural features, one of which is the burnt clay roof and floor. In addition to this naturally textured material, there are other materials of the same nature, including handmade bricks and tiles, and stained tropical wood, all of which are sourced locally. “We weren't looking for a glossy finish, instead we were interested in using local, organic materials” says César Béjar.
On the far left of the building is a cleverly arranged passageway that serves as the entrance to the residence, which itself is an unassuming door with a bench set up for rest and contemplation. The entrance space subtly separates the interior of the building as well as the outside world, allowing one to focus on the inward-facing view, which opens up to the central patio. Here, the building attempts to create a perspective that is private and centered on the interior space, and the four facades present a transition in design language from the introverted, traditional frontage facing the street to the more exploratory, unrestricted rear of the residence, a gradient that reflects the transition from three-dimensional to tectonic.
César Béjar and Fernando Sánchez designed the layout of the first floor in the shape of a “U”, with the open plan living, dining and kitchen on the left, and the bathrooms and bedrooms, as well as indoor and outdoor lounge areas, on the right. On the second floor are two bedrooms, each with its own balcony, and in the center of the “U” is a spacious outdoor entertaining area.
The design team divided the residential building into two functional areas, a social area in the front yard and a multi-purpose area in the back yard, which has both rooms and terraces.
Sliding doors run throughout the space, ensuring that the open-plan kitchen, dining and living areas transition gracefully between indoors and outdoors. The rear has a simple architectural style, consisting mainly of rounded columns and panels that allow for more connection to the garden, while being adaptable to the context and intended use. The balconies mimic elements washed by the sea, emphasizing the plasticity of the beach house, as if “extending” from the columns to create an inclusive spatial experience, while the terraces are unobstructed to encourage openness.
Due to Nuevo Vallarta's tropical climate, the outdoor spaces have also been carefully tended. Sloping high ceilings create a sense of openness, and most of the materials used in the space were sourced from César Béjar and Fernando Sánchez specified locally sourced, organic materials such as stained tropical wood and handmade tiles.
The first floor bedrooms are located in the backyard of the residential building, isolated from the street outside the building, and offer full views of the surrounding gardens through large windows.
