Balzar Arquitectos &
Balzar Arquitectos designed Los Olivos House on the outskirts of Quesa, a small town in central Valencia, Spain. The building blends seamlessly into the surrounding olive groves and is a synthesis of the natural environment, human life and architecture, a link between the city and the countryside.
Originally from Barcelona, the owners spent several summers in the area during their childhood. And when the owners revisited the town, they reconnected with the people as well as the environment, thus beginning the story of Los Olivos House.
The building is built on a steel-framed structure using galvanized steel profiles, which serve as the load-bearing structure of the house, supporting the exterior walls and room dividers. The project draws on the popular American 'balloon frame' to develop an innovative and austere building system, with large metal frames supporting 18-meter-long openings that allow plenty of sunlight into the living spaces, and a warm copper-red color that covers the entire façade.
The house is fully integrated with its environment through a variety of architectural resources - firstly, three courtyards with views of the sky and olive trees, while also providing privacy; secondly, a wide 18-meter-long balcony, typical of Mediterranean cultures in warmer climates, which protects against the heat from the West while serving as a transition between interior and exterior function; thirdly, a large longitudinal terrace with a swimming pool that extends to the olive groves and offers a beautiful view of the sunsets illuminated through the groves; and finally, large windows that connect the passageway, the garden and the yard, as well as all the interior spaces of the house.
The design team was mindful of the building's connection to the natural environment and therefore spatially and visually merged the indoor and outdoor areas. The light and shadows of the olive grove dominate the building - through a large glass door that can be opened, sunlight streams in from the balcony and the large terrace, where it can be enjoyed in the other living area. On either side of the living area are the suites with bedrooms and their respective bathrooms, which are integrated with the exterior through two private courtyards.
“Water, another focal point of the design, has a strong presence throughout the house. The outdoor swimming pool is semi-circular at one end, partially covered by a vaulted ceiling, and extends out onto the terraces and into the olive groves that serve as gardens for the building. Inside the building, the swimming pool with spa, bathroom shower, large windows and outdoor shower complete the experience. Both pools are heatable and can be used all year round.
The building's materials, colors and textures are significant to its unique appearance. Terra cotta tones dominate the floors and facades, integrating the building with its environment. Exotic marbles such as Iranian travertine, brass and olive green woodwork contrast to give the space a unique atmosphere in harmony with the place.
The building stands out for the connection between the interior and the exterior, all the interior spaces are visually connected to the spectacular olive groves that characterize the area, thus - magical visual effects, connections, light and shadow are produced, while the olive groves are always the protagonists of the house. This connection is different in each room - everyday spaces and passages are connected directly to the porch and terrace through a large motorized glass. The en-suite bedrooms, with their respective bathrooms, are connected to the exterior through two additional private courtyards.
The design team conceptualized the project with the building's energy efficiency in mind. The house meets the criteria of a “passive house” and has a minimum energy consumption. Passive houses are characterized by exceptionally high levels of comfort and very low energy consumption, which is achieved by applying environmentally friendly principles: high-performance windows, adequate ventilation, insulation, sealing, and a design that reduces thermal bridges.
