Child Studio was commissioned to design a residence for a hotelier and restaurateur in London, where the owner had a particular focus on spaces for dining, hosting parties and entertaining, thus giving birth to Mayfair Residence.

Tucked away in a historic courtyard in the heart of London's Mayfair, an area known for its rich history and grand architecture, the secluded site provided the design team with a blank canvas for a space that seamlessly blends the past with the present.

Mayfair Residence

“Inspired by Yves Saint Laurent's Grand Salon on Rue de Babylone in Paris, we were interested in finding an authentic design language for this project as a starting point to create a space that effortlessly balances Art Deco with 60's and 70's modernism”. “The spacious living space is a social area where guests can gather in a warm and relaxed environment,” say Che Huang and Alexy Kos of Child Studio. Here, we have brought together a collection of collectible 20th century furniture, complemented by an eclectic mix of sculptures, heirlooms and art books, which together create a relaxed and cozy living atmosphere”.

The dramatic open space is anchored on either side by narrow skylights inserted along the walls as a way to bring daylight into the interior spaces. The design team wrapped the space in a series of elaborate wooden 'library' walls and subdivided the interior into different zones, including a lounge, dining room and study area.

The focal point of the spacious open space is the undulating fireplace below the skylight, whose gentle curves are carved out of polished plaster, flooding the space with natural light and creating a soft, ethereal atmosphere.

“The fireplace was designed to bring a sense of scale and permanence to the space, and it's wonderful to see its soft geometry respond to the changing light throughout the day,” explain Che Huang and Alexy Kos of Child Studio.

Beautifully crafted Japanese paper lamps by Ingo Maurer placed on white Calacatta Viola marble tables provide a tactile element to the space.

Mid-century antiques such as Bruno Mathsson's Pernilla lounge chair, a bentwood Caprani floor lamp and a leather armchair by Danish master Kristian Vedel are arranged around a large asymmetrical maple coffee table designed by Child Studio and paired with the warm color palette of the iconic Eames screen.

The intimate dining area consists of custom mahogany “library” cabinetry with deep red Rosso Levanto marble cladding. It is separated from the kitchenette by a glass block partition and allows the exterior daylight to softly transition through the interior space in a geometric pattern.

Che Huang and Alexy Kos of Child Studio say, “The material palette of this room draws inspiration from Adolf Loos' modernist villa: Muller. We used dark mahogany, patterned marble and green upholstery in this space, a combination that feels very chic, yet warm and rustic.”

Velvet dining chairs by Charlotte Perriand are complemented by a rare antique “Uchiwa” chandelier by Ingo Maurer - a handmade lamp made of a “large fan” suspended from a bamboo frame. overlapping “big fans” suspended from a bamboo frame.

The custom round maple table was custom-designed by Child Studio, and the handmade wool rugs with gradient patterns are from Child Studio's collection of rugs designed specifically for the Bauhaus movement.

Tucked behind the library shelves is the owner's study. This quiet space is dedicated to focused work, and an eclectic collection of sculptures, objects, books, and artwork line the shelves of this peaceful “sanctuary”. These include antique lithographs by George Braque, Jean Cocteau and Karel Appel, as well as photographs by Guy Bourdin and Man Ray.

Wooden walls are adorned with Danish brass wall sconces from the 1960s, and other vintage accessories in the space include floor lamps by pioneering Italian manufacturer Stilnovo and a 1960s table lamp by Spanish modernist Pedro Martín.
