Pierre Yovanovitch has created a vibrant set that captures and amplifies the growing emotion, tension, and drama of the opera. A longtime opera lover, this project is the realization of a lifelong dream for Pierre Yovanovitch, whose practice focuses on residential and furniture design. Known for his mastery of volume, proportion, and light, Pierre Yovanovitch's couture aesthetic of understated opulence and elegant simplicity is effortlessly in tune with the themes of power, innocence, duty, and vengeance of the opera Rigoletto. Rigoletto's themes of power, innocence, duty and revenge blend effortlessly.
Rigoletto tells the story of a jester at the court of the Duke of Mantua, whose world comes crashing down when his innocent daughter Gilda attracts the Duke's attention. Inspired by this tale of revenge, innocence, and power, Pierre Yovanovitch conceived a moveable design scheme that includes three curved walls nested within another.
Conducted by Michele Spotti and featuring Swiss soprano Regula Mühlemann as Gilda, the opera runs through June 21, 2023, giving opera and design lovers plenty of time to experience Pierre Yovanovitch's operatic creations.
Pierre Yovanovitch's moveable design scheme has a modern aesthetic with a sensual timelessness, incorporating his signature curved staircase spanning the entire width of the stage, distinctive colors, and architectural angles into a bold and simple set that unfolds the drama's complex psychological storyline. Their movement serves to frame the characters and draw attention to shifts in behavior throughout the show. As the story unfolds, they merge into a tighter and tighter circle to enhance the psychological sense of drama. Each wall within the curved stage is painted bright red on the inside and blue on the outside, and can rotate 360 degrees around a circular track, punctuated by a rectangular doorway in the center.
Also visible in the background is a massive white curved staircase - Pierre Yovanovitch's signature design style seems to span the width of the opera house - and hanging from the ceiling is a minimalist chandelier made up of three concentric halos. The set design evokes the swooping architectural curves of Richard Serra's monumental sculpture and its distorting effect on the audience's perception, in this case accentuated by the set's movable design. By making the installation mobile, Pierre Yovanovitch also makes each scene offer the audience a different perspective, as do the colors he has chosen for the curved walls, which alternate between white, blue, and red in an evocative way, and draw attention to the shifts in behavior that occur throughout the performance.
Pierre Yovanovitch also customized the furniture, which included curved combination sofas, sofa beds, and round tables with cylindrical bases surrounded by similarly shaped stools. His unique design language shines through all of these pieces, which are simple, perfectly proportioned and boldly colored. Combined with expressionist lighting design, these sets captivate the viewer despite their austere design. At the same time, as Pierre Yovanovitch says, the minimalist set design allows the souls of the characters to take up as much space as possible.
