For Casa Maiora, a four-bedroom home in Carlovigno, designer Andrew Trotter drew inspiration from the type of stucco-vaulted architecture prevalent in the Puglia countryside that has characterised his previous design idioms and projects, and he would also look to other villas along the coastline for inspiration - in particular their large colonnades, spacious verandas and earthy colours.

Casa Maiora combines spacious open spaces and outdoor living areas, exuding lightness and calmness through an understated design language of soft colours, natural materials and sparse but ‘soulful’ furniture, proving that simplicity can be a remarkable architectural style when designed correctly.

Casa Maiora

Casa Maiora is perched on the highest point of the estate's plot in order to get the best possible view of the sea. This one-storey building harmoniously blends into the Italian landscape of Puglia thanks to its low, rectilinear volumes and austere colour palette.

Casa Maiora's building is constructed from a local mix of yellow and green sandstone, which has been painted by local craftsmen with a completely natural lime powder.

Casa Maiora

The building's pergola corridor ceiling is covered in thick rattan, reminiscent of the souks of Marrakech, and the pergola provides plenty of shade from the midsummer sun, making the space the perfect place to relax, have lunch or take a siesta.

Casa Maiora has been designed as a family house, where it can be lived in by a family or rented out.

Casa Maiora

The owner's request was that the outdoor area of this residential building accommodate summer living while connecting to the surrounding natural environment, so the design team wanted to incorporate nature to a greater extent by giving the building a large number of openings, as well as a spacious balcony that extends along the south side of the building.

The light earthy tones of the exterior continue into the interior of the house, where a sense of minimalist elegance prevails.

Stone paved floors and lime stuccoed walls lend an understated rustic feel to the interior, while large Cretan style windows and patio doors inject a subtle modernity and ensure that an abundance of views and natural light can be enjoyed throughout the house.

The project's modernist elegance is further enhanced by vintage tables, chairs, ceramics and light fixtures handpicked by the design team from local markets and craft shops, combined with contemporary pieces from brands such as Frama and DCW éditions.

Andrew Trotter's preference for traditional materials and techniques is further emphasised by the bespoke terrazzo worktops in the kitchen and the use of ‘cocciopesto’ (an ancient building material obtained by grinding natural clay) in the bathrooms.
