Located in the heart of an 85,000 square metre plot overlooking the Balearic Sea in Spain, Can Brut is a family villa that follows a ‘natural craftsmanship’ design philosophy that is steeped in tradition and connected to the present.

Most people come here looking for an escape from the hustle and bustle, and the story of the owners of this villa is no exception, as this villa serves as their ‘hidden’ haven by the sea.

As one of the smallest beaches on the island, the area is largely untouched by travellers, making it a private cove for the locals. The seabed is ‘inlaid’ with smooth stones, making swimming and snorkelling a year-round affair.

The villa's pool area takes its inspiration from this secluded island, with the ‘sea’ expressed in Verde Lapponia tiles and the ‘beach’ in sandstone and Travertino Romano.

The gardens have all the hallmarks of Balearic island life, such as lush romantic flowers and winding sandstone corridors, and Alexandra Ramos, Senior Architect and Interior Designer at Framework Studio, says: ‘We have tried to capture the feeling of the Balearic islands in terms of materials and colour palette, with an emphasis on comfort and simplicity. ’

With a focus on craftsmanship, Framework Studio paired custom woodwork with minimalist sculptural pieces - a vintage Wiener Werstatten sofa and a one-of-a-kind wall art piece by Nerone Patuzzi - to form a unpretentious ‘organic’ interior. Vintage, second-hand pieces are the guiding theme, while honest materials are the foundation, and Framework Studio's philosophy is based on ‘bringing out the true identity of the materials’.

Light from the outside space floods the corridors of the interior spaces, creating an easy access to the kitchen and living areas. The curved ceilings reference traditional building methods and give the villa an open, airy feel.

Hidden skylights create architectural depth, while the internal façade creates spatial contrast. Continuous contact with the outdoors is achieved through a direct link between indoor and outdoor spaces.

Standing in the kitchen or living area, the view of the outdoor swimming pool and dining area is ‘framed’ from every angle, Alexandra Ramos says: ‘The view gives you a magical feeling of total seclusion, of being away from the hustle and bustle! This view gives you a magical feeling of complete seclusion, and takes you away from the hustle and bustle,’ says Alexandra Ramos, and the backdrop of the ocean and the century-old Sabina tree certainly confirms this.
