Focusing on embedding warmth through subtle variations and consistency throughout, CJH Studio emphasises the home as a place of calm, creating both a unique haven for the homeowners and a series of familiar and well-respected residential spaces.

CJH Studio

Influenced by a modern Belgian flavour, it is a warm and pleasant home. As you step into this redesigned Melbourne townhouse, there is a sense of being transported out of the city and into an ‘ocean’ of calming neutrals, soft furnishings and warm textures, providing space to recharge before the new day.

The name comes from its rich caramel tones and is the perfect backdrop for the owners' busy city life. The owners, a professional couple with a young daughter, wanted a space that was completely separate from their work.

The multi-storey townhouse formed the basis for the creation of the subsequent space through the high quality of the original building, which was then conceived as a combination of the old and the new at the same time. In order to better express the elements of the new space, so that the sense of identity and narrative of expression of the people inhabiting the space is shared throughout the process, CJH Studio took the people on a journey to create a home that is a destination like a haven.

The caramel colour palette throughout reflects the personality of the homeowners, who love the sense of calm and nuance it exudes, and Cassie James-Herrick, Director of CJH Studio, describes the palette as ‘intentional consistency’ and ‘thoughtful restraint’, as it requires great control and attention to detail in the design process.

Balancing warm textural elements, natural wood and stone with cooler metals and glass, a sense of depth was created through tactile forms and soft furnishings.CJH Studio intentionally avoided harsh lighting in the space, opting for subtle wall sconces and light fixtures to ensure that the space maintains its ambience even at night.

The dining space is designed for entertaining and relaxation amidst the space's signature caramel colour palette. The space features Maxalto Febo dining chairs and a Roberto Lazzeroni Mizar Giorgetti dining table, while the wood-carved bowls on the island were custom-designed by CJH Studio and are one of the owners' favourite pieces in the home.

Focusing on light while also creating a sense of shared intimacy within, it was the result of a carefully curated plan.CJH Studio's initial brief was to provide basic soft furnishings for the home, but the scope expanded over time.

The design team wanted to ensure that the integrity of the owner's vision was realised, so by making warmth a key factor, and by removing the vast differences in tone throughout the space, a shared softness was created throughout the walls, floors and all the introduced joinery, furniture, lighting and artwork.

The design team introduced timber and natural stone to the space, bringing texture into the space through the surface materials and their interaction with incident light.

In the re-planning, deeper areas were used as places to relax, while those closer to natural light were positioned as more open and connected public areas.

As a re-inheritance of the original townhouse, the height and detail of the joinery throughout the space is used to support everyday life and as a crafted piece in its own right.

The softness of the wall surfaces completes the spatial picture, with the use of finishes that seem to have a ‘built-in’ effect.

Intended as a transitional space, it incorporates the architectural ‘shell’ of the existing townhouse, with rich textures carefully laid out within the space to enhance the everyday experience.
