Magdalena Romanowska, founder of Romanowska Studio, was commissioned to refurbish a light-filled flat in Warsaw, Poland.
Working closely with the owner, a graphic designer with a passion for art and architecture, Magdalena Romanowska applied a minimalist design language of clean lines and simple geometric shapes with noble materials such as Carrara marble, oiled oak and brass to give the flat an air of understated sophistication, along with some iconic modernist furnishings and the owner's vibrant art and decorative collection, and then add the Sixties character of the home's spaces with mid-century modernist features - such as high ceilings, herringbone parquet floors and elegant window woodwork - and you have the makings of a home that is impeccably individual in its design.
The front room, made of oak panelling, opens up to the living room, dining room and kitchen, which in turn are connected to the separate living room by wood-framed glass doors.
Whitewashed walls, herringbone parquet flooring and built-in minimalist oak bookcases and cupboards add a sense of nostalgic elegance to both spaces, which is further accentuated by carefully selected mid-century modern furniture.
In the living room, a light grey minimalist sofa is paired with an oak Gueridon table designed by Jean Prouvé in the late 1940s and two Capitol Complex armchairs by Cassina in tribute to Pierre Jeanneret.
In addition to the blue walls, the two armchairs are upholstered in ochre and ‘vert anglaise’ green, injecting elegance into the soft earthy tones of the living room, a reference to the masterful colour scheme of Le Corbusie's ‘Les Couleurs’.
In the dining room, a large oak table with a steel base is complemented by Marcel Breuer's iconic ebony-framed Cesca chairs and Louis Poulsen's three-piece hand-blown glass VL45 chandelier, originally designed by Danish architect Vilhelm Lauritzen in the 1940s.
Magdalena Romanowska crafted a number of bespoke design elements based on the original geometry of the space, including mirrored kitchen cabinets that enhance the sense of spaciousness, and oak wardrobes and cabinets that separate the front room from the dining and kitchen areas.
Magdalena Romanowska
Built-in shelving between the dining and living areas provides ample display space for the owner's eclectic collection of antiques, traditional and contemporary decorative items sourced from around the world, including a bespoke oak and marble console table, while windows running throughout the space overlook the beautiful internal gardens in the building's courtyard.
Bespoke oak furniture can also be found in the bedrooms, which is balanced by the soft ambient feel of cotton and natural linen fabrics, while a wealth of artwork by the likes of Teresa Pągowska, Józef Pankiewicz, and Matthieu Cosse adds a playful touch to the otherwise minimalist design of the rooms.
