Lauren Piscione and fashion designer Danielle Bernstein's home in SoHo is nothing like a traditional New York flat. Working closely with Danielle Bernstein, designer Lauren Piscione adopted the design principles of wabi-sabi, wrapping the flat in warm, natural tones and earthy textures to create a soothing sanctuary away from the hustle and bustle of New York City.
Lauren Piscione says, ‘The home needed to provide Danielle Bernstein with respite from the public eye. I really wanted to design a space where Danielle Bernstein could really relax and exhale - a space that felt zen, calm and homey.’
‘My favourite space is the living room, which blends in with the dining room and kitchen to create a large, inclusive space that's perfect for hosting events’ says Danielle Berstein ’In this space, you'll find many organic shapes such as curves and straight lines that create contrasts ‘In this space you will find many organic shapes, such as the contrast between curves and straight lines.
Instead of the exposed red brick walls typical of the area, lime cement walls now ‘frame’ the home, but one will find camel-coloured lime cement walls in the main living areas and soft olive colours in the master bedroom, which create a tactile backdrop for Danielle Bernstein's vintage furniture. Backdrop.
Lauren Piscione says she naturally gravitates towards organic textures and materials such as reclaimed wood, worn organic linens and limewash paints, and their glossy finish. The more lived-in, the better, she adds - not only does she love the aesthetic, but she also finds that using materials that naturally age and evolve over time allows people the freedom to live in their homes.
Lauren Piscione
Lauren Piscione describes how ‘we were very thoughtful in our selection of wall art, and only a few pieces that really evoked the feeling we were looking for made the final cut’.
Lauren Piscione
