When WHITE Hotel opened on the southern coast of São Miguel Island in the Azores in 2017, it stood out not only for its monochrome colour scheme, but also for its tailor-made hospitality - the nine suites and one villa boutique hotel has become known as a pioneer of luxury tourism in the archipelago.

Not content to rest on its laurels, WHITE Hotel's hoteliers Catarina and João Reis decided last winter that it was time for a makeover.

Daniela Franceschini, Spanish interior designer and creative director at Quiet Studios, drew inspiration from the WHITE Hotel's postcard location (the resort sits on top of a basalt cliff overlooking the sea) and infused the resort with the island's volcanic soul by complementing the original, all-white palette with shades of grey and black.

Catarina and João Reis discovered the ruins of an old manor house near the town of Lagoa on the southern coast of São Miguel on a hiking trip as part of a wine production site, and the house enjoys soothing tranquillity and breathtaking views of the sea.Catarina and João Reis are passionate about creating unique places, and two years ago their first project Santa Bárbara, the first eco-beach resort in the Azores, they decided to transform the old building into a unique boutique hotel, crucially without compromising its vernacular architecture.

Five years later, the WHITE Hotel has undergone a refurbishment that has deepened the hotel's sense of ambience, as Daniela Franceschini explains, ‘One of the most important things in a hotel like this is the sense of place’ and ‘guests want to feel like they are in the Azores’.
