Billy Maynard &《
Immerse yourself in a picturesque Australian bush camping scene where the weather is slightly overcast and the temperature is neither too hot nor too cold. Vibrant greens burst from the ground as if ready to captivate people in this world, making the whole scene resemble a classic oil landscape.
As one gently sweeps through the imaginary eucalyptus leaves, one will overhear the Billy Maynard-designed home -- House at Flat Rock, a three-year project that sits quaintly in the neighbourhood of Bundalung, New South Wales, Australia.
Accessible by car to the state's south coast, the House at Flat Rock sits on the border of the Conchora National Park with dense bushland. In the wake of the devastating forest fires of 2020, which did not spare the houses around the area, it became a memory and a key point in the design. At the same time, as an architectural vehicle, the Flat Rock house will also serve as a bridge between the people living in the area and nature itself.
The residential building is a well-defined L-shaped structure disguised by an undulating brick façade and an exterior of charred and rusted red steel, which encompasses and honours the rejuvenated lawn and surrounding shrubbery.
Across a slender and cobbled path with multi-purpose storage space, a narrow entrance defined by a dramatic entrance room can be seen. Once over the threshold, a kitchen and a sitting area reveal the nostalgia of the cabin, a space that features a balanced and modest palette, which includes exposed mahogany ceilings and matching hardware.
Polished concrete floors and white walls are complemented by textured tiles. Steel panels were chosen as a splashback for the kitchen and as a complementary material for the installation of louvre fittings to comply with the bushfire rating.
Although considered open by design, just as the exterior is camouflaged, privatised areas are reflected internally. Almost invisible to the naked eye, an entrance along the hardwood wall leads to the bedroom of the Billy Maynard residence.
The rear half of the L-shaped structure reveals the layout of the personal areas, with a master bedroom with en-suite and a guest bedroom occupying the first two-thirds of the structure, while the second guest bedroom is half-separated by a truncated entrance that creates an en-suite bathroom with a corner window to capture the serene sunlight.
The structure is reminiscent of traditional Southeast Asian architecture, with operable facades and an L-shaped structure that combine like an embrace to give the impression that this residential building is both open and private. Together with the full-height windows and projecting rafters, the porosity of the structure is mitigated by its presence.
A powerful debut for Billy Maynard, House at Flat Rock evokes respect for materials and site. Rather than solving problems in a direct and radical way, this residential building embraces its surroundings and is built with elegance - leaving minimal disruption to the landscape that is only noticeable when one looks for it.
