Viminalus House is a typical red brick veneer house that was completely remodelled by Not All Architecture. In response to its location and new occupants, the design team attempted to work in a style that is indigenous to Australia, and specifically not appropriate to its site or location - a red brick veneer house from the 1980s.

The owners wanted to ensure that the house would echo its setting and coastal ethos, so the design team built on the architectural foundations to create a sense of ritual entry into the space - an elevated boardwalk with the familiar features of the local coastal boardwalk, which, when stepped on, leads one to an unexpectedly open, light-filled rear of the dwelling space at the rear of the home.

At the entrance, the existing bottlebrush tree (Melaleuca Viminalis) was retained to guide the entrance. The boardwalk entrance also creates an enclosed courtyard between the original and new built forms, protecting from cool southwesterly breezes as well as allowing summer breezes to enter the space, providing an additional outdoor retreat.

At each stage of the project, Not All Architecture worked directly with the owner to consider the impacts and benefits of demolishing the existing home or building a new addition, which also included a review of the budget, sustainability, the costs of altering the existing home and building a new home, as well as design opportunities and constraints in the above scenarios.

Following discussions within the design team, one factor agreed was to retain the scale of the existing dwelling rather than build a new space of lesser quality for the client's budget. By retaining the existing home and keeping a smaller footprint, the new addition could include higher quality details and materials. The additions to the home include a master bedroom, kitchen, living room and dining room.

A baseline extends from the ceiling of the existing home to the new addition, Tasmanian oak hardwoods surround all new interior spaces, and the new roof slopes to the north.

The timber provides a familiar sense of ambience of an old beach house and provides a distinct change of character from new to old. By engaging with the surrounding landscape and optimising orientation and angles, the home becomes more comfortable.

Not All Architecture wanted to retain any sense of self and connection to the environment within the home, allowing for a flow between the interior and exterior of the space, whilst also allowing for a sense of openness and relaxation within the space.

A palette of warm toned materials connects to the original brickwork of the home and wraps around the interior, with the timber mixing with polished concrete floors and painted plaster elements to create a clear balance in the visual aspect of the space.

The original home was largely preserved, and the design team added large floor-to-ceiling windows to illuminate the dark side of the space that had never previously had light inside.

The homeowners saw the value in pushing the design and opportunities into their budget by taking the time to do so, so they also took a keen interest in the process and construction, which ultimately led to a better presentation of the space.

The design team decided to give the existing home a backyard with fresh air and greenery that could be visited by adults as well as children, while allowing the homeowners to spend most of their time in the backyard of the house.

The main living spaces have projecting glass settings to frame the canopy of the existing gum trees on the site. The roof pitch and eaves are designed to allow the winter sun to penetrate deeply enough into the living spaces, while the heated concrete floors take advantage of the thermal mass effect to reduce the need for heating in the winter.
