Blackstone Apartments is located in Liangzhu Cultural Village, Hangzhou, designed by WATER TEAM DESIGN.
The residence is built on a hill and the space has a loft on the top floor, where one can have a unique view of the mountain and the city. The owner is a freelance photographer, which gives the design team enough room for creativity. The owner wants the home to be undefinable, so the space brings together art galleries, studios, residences, socialising, photography, and other modes and venues in one.
The design team has always believed that the essence of space is to be used by people, and that flat functions must meet the individual needs of the owner, and that good design follows the principle of ease of use. The design of a flat is extremely personal, even intimate. Therefore, the designer is required to have a deep understanding of the owner's life trajectory and special needs in order to develop the design.
The flat has a total of two floors, with an open layout design on the ground floor that takes into account a photography studio, a multi-functional living room, and an open-plan dining room. The original load-bearing columns are wrapped in the shape, giving the space more interesting experiences from all perspectives. Considering the friendly relationship between the owner and the animals in the space, the corner grey space of the public bathroom is used to reserve a hole (the daily entrance to the cat's toilet), so that the animals and the human beings can live together harmoniously and coexist within the function of the living space.
The guest bedroom is reserved for a hidden double bed in the whole wardrobe, through this design, the space is allowed to have more activity places without using the corresponding functions.
The entrance and middle area are partially raised to create a three-dimensional experience of different spaces. Large sliding doors provide openness to the reserved living room on the ground floor, which in turn allows the spaces to be separated from each other through different uses, while the hand-finished textured paint walls define the open spaces. Meanwhile, the use of two black handmade tiles in different proportions of area creates a sense of mystery.
The space mixes a variety of materials, using copper, aluminium, handmade bricks, stone, micro-cement, and texture paint, and by controlling the proportion of materials used, it ultimately achieves rhythm and balance. The whole space is centred on a handmade purple copper rotary staircase. The handmade feel of the materials will appropriately convey an air of warmth, so the space somehow has a serene and warm atmosphere.
Donald Judd, a leading figure in American minimalism, valued objects in their own right and believed that ‘shapes, volumes, colours, surfaces are things in themselves. They should not be buried among other things.’
The legacy of the original building's casement windows and structure was a difficult part of the project's transformation, and one that had to be addressed if the design team wanted to change the aura of the space. If the eyes are the windows to the soul, then the windows had to be the spirit of the building. As it is located on the top floor, there is plenty of light, so the adjustment of the proportion of the windows is an important basis for controlling the indoor and outdoor space to achieve harmony. The subdued entry of light will give the space a sense of ambience and pleasure.
The design team achieved an unexpected visual balance between the combination of various materials and the clumsy handmade feeling through the carefully considered geometric structure, the proportion of lines and the careful attention to materials. Not only to express the quietness, tranquility and warmth of the space, but also to create a spiritual refuge for the owners.
The first floor is the owner's private space, which is divided into more public and private spaces through the use of different materials - the bathroom, study, dressing room and storage room are all wrapped in two ‘boxes’.
The design team wanted to reduce the number of objects in the house to achieve an ‘empty’ atmosphere, designing more hidden storage features to free up more public space. Large spaces like the living room and master bedroom do not require luxury or significant decoration, as they are usually placed in the best parts of the house and have the best natural light and views.
