With its wheat-toned interiors and Italian rationalist iconography, one would expect Sorrento House to be located somewhere along the Positano coastline in Italy; instead, Sorrento House sits quietly across the street from the Sorrento Sailing Club in Victoria, Australia.

When Fiona Lynch came on board this much-needed makeover, she was certain of one thing - the space's pristine state had to be completely destroyed. ‘I removed the all-white interior membrane, the grey laminated joinery and the intrusive open shelving elements, a legacy of the space's most recent renovation’ shares Fiona Lynch.

To bring the beach inside, Fiona Lynch brought together a range of design applications that mimic the surroundings. Wheat-toned raffia wallpaper (in the living spaces and sleeping areas above and the entertaining area below), sage plaster surfaces that resemble thick undergrowth and coastline, and woven wicker screens and doors that welcome the sea breeze.

The dining room, which is connected to the kitchen, whistles like the tide - a great house for the beach, one would think. But despite the similar colours and finishes, the kitchen has its own character - oak-finish joinery, limestone worktops, integral island benches and ocean-facing windows that embrace the coastline.The L-shaped joinery, extractor hood and cabinet doors are sealed with bronze cladding, and the metal finishes accentuate the structural elements, adding a subtle sheen to the matte surfaces adding a subtle lustre.

It's the splash of colour in these rugs, a rich palette from the shallows to the bay beyond, that makes you feel as if you're on Sorrento's vast coastline, if only for a moment.
