Andre Mellone, founder of Studio Mellone, is known for designing elegantly understated, textured interiors, including flats in New York and London, as well as retail shops for Thom Browne and Jason Wu.

Born and raised in Brazil, Andre Mellone has a degree in architecture from Syracuse University and prefers ‘simple forms’ in his designs, but he is not dogmatic.Andre Mellone's attraction to 20th century modernist furniture was fostered by his father, a renowned industrial designer, and Andre Mellone views rooms as ‘simple geometric forms arranged in a way that makes sense to me’.

Andre Mellone's preferred form of design is evident in a serene flat in Brooklyn.

Andre Mellone

The flat is a temporary home for a couple, and the husband appreciates what the wife calls Andre Mellone's ‘pretty restrained palette’ and his sense of proportion - an important skill for the couple, considering the flat's 11-and-a-half-foot ceilings. It's an important skill for the couple, and they're intrigued by the shelves of old National Geographic magazines in their New York flat, which the husband notes ‘would be a good idea for our young grandchildren who live nearby.’ (Andre Mellone previously designed this client's residential architectural interiors in Lake George, New York.)

The flat is full of modernist design. In the flat's entryway, a mid-century American mirror hangs above an Andre Mellone-designed console and vintage Jo Hammerborg table lamp, and next to it a Pierre Jeanneret chair sits on a Marion Dorn rug.

In the living room, under Wenguang Chen's art paintings, is a sofa designed by Andre Mellone and covered in Senegalese fabric, next to a pair of vintage PK 31 chairs designed by modernist master Poul Kjaerholm, a 1936 Alvar Aalto tea trolley, and a Danish bookcase, which is used to store the couple's own collection of old National Geographic magazines, and a 1950s coffee table in front of the sofa designed by John Keal.

Next to the sofa is an Alvar Aalto tea trolley from 1936, with a lamp that is one of a pair of 1960s ceramic lamps in the bedroom, designed by Aldo Londi for the Italian firm Bitossi.

The hard lines of the structural columns separating the living room from the dining room are softened by a circa 1940 pine screen from the Parisian firm Baumann Fils, and Andre Mellone added shutters to the windows to hide the fact that they do not extend to the ceiling.

Andre Mellone created a ‘centre’ for the living room with three 1960s rectangular armchairs (and a cushioned stool) designed by Bernard Govin. In the corner, a Gio Ponti floor lamp stands next to another Andre Mellone sofa, a bell-shaped table from Karl Springer, and an artwork on the sofa from Ryan Mosley.

Two vintage 1930s Maxime chairs flank the windows, and a set of nesting tables (one in the foreground) was designed by Ico Parisi.

Under the work of artist Françoise Grossen, a bookshelf designed by Andre Mellone holds copies of old National Geographic magazines, and the tripod sculpture on the left is by William Kentridge, whose wife explains that ‘the art is my contribution to the flat.’

In the dining area on the far side of a large structural column wrapped in a vintage French pine screen, there's a vintage Jean Perzel light fixture hanging over a 1960s elm table designed by Pierre Chapo and chairs designed by Pierre Jeanneret, and paintings by Christine Corday hang in the background of the area.

Along the corridor is a low window seat designed by Andre Mellone (a perfect hideaway for the client's grandchildren to play games), and the space also includes works by contemporary artists such as William Kentridge and Françoise Grossen, part of a diverse collection assembled by his wife.

The study has what Andre Mellone calls ‘high wall panelling’ of solid mahogany, and the arrangement of African artefacts on the shelves harmonises with the furniture by Aalto and Osvaldo Borsani.

An antique Chinese stool that belonged to the client's mother adds an ornate touch to the clean lines of the master bedroom.

The bedside tables in the master bedroom are made from 1960s wall-mounted chests of drawers by Uno and Östen Kristiansson, and the bedside lamps are in the Italian style of the 1950s.Andre Mellone covered the bed, which is situated under a large painting by Masatake Kozaki, in velvet, and designed the low velvet upholstered wall behind the bed, as well as the opposite corner L-shaped bench and table.

Rachel Bullock's charcoal drawing hangs above the L-shaped bench and lacquer table, both by Andre Mellone.
