Centrally located in The Netherlands lies this private residence consisting of two wooden bungalows. A former studio house designed by Dutch artist Willem G. Van der Hulst, known as a painter and sculptor. Build in 1964 for himself as a residence to be inspired by the calming rural landscape.

Peace and tranquility immediately overwhelms you as you enter the grounds surrounded by trees and water. You can leave the busy live at the gate. A longing of a young family to create their recreational home here and enjoy the outdoors and time spent together.

Studio Asker was approached to transform the bungalows into a comfortable home with a contemporary Scandinavian cabin-ambience. A place that is in close contact with nature - to escape from modern life. Which can be fully enjoyed during the summers, but also feels warm and intimate during the darker days.

Studio Asker

The first intervention was to reorganize the layout. A clumsy volume and multiple walls separating two sides of the main house were stripped down. Now, upon entering and throughout the living area, you will be amazed by the panoramic views over the rural landscape.

Carefully curated stacked bricks form a fireplace that fits within the proportions of the house. Slightly longer bricks than usual were chosen to reflect the horizontal characteristics of the bungalow. This can also be found in the several long cantilevered windows that frame the views as if it were a work of art. The use of light tracks with directional spotlights enhances this feeling. A subtle nod to the origins of the artist’s home.
