Lawless & Meyerson designed the transformation of a waterfront apartment in the Woolloomooloo finger wharf in Sydney for a young couple.

The renovation respects both the apartment building's 1990s origins and the heritage-listed wharf structure below it.

In terms of material and colour selection, the design team aimed to create a bright, light and timeless spatial atmosphere, allowing the external view to become the protagonist of the space. The foundational palette includes lime-washed oak herringbone parquetry flooring, Savannah marble benchtops, and crisp white painted walls.

These materials collectively establish a neutral yet warm backdrop, effectively drawing the external harbour scenery into the interior.

Built between 1910 and 1915, the wharf has become a cherished part of Woolloomooloo's history. Saved from demolition in the late 1980s following public protest, it was subsequently transformed into a precinct housing a boutique hotel, apartments, and dining areas.

The design team's task was to create a tranquil home within this story-rich space, allowing the young owners to embrace both its historic charm and its prime location.

The selection of furniture also reflects careful consideration of textural integration.

In the living area, a linen sofa, a Knoll Wassily chair in canvas and chrome, and a concrete coffee table are harmoniously placed atop a custom-made sisal rug. This juxtaposition of objects with different material qualities adds depth and interest to the space, all while maintaining an overall simplicity and cohesion.

A secondary bedroom in the original layout, which appropriated much of the living area's natural light, was removed to consolidate the space into a generous master suite.

As articulated by Jo Lawless, Co-Director of the firm: "The clients wanted a one-bedroom apartment suitable for daily living, working, and occasional entertaining." Consequently, instead of using a solid wall to completely separate the bedroom from the living room, the design team drew inspiration from boutique hotel design—installing a white steel-framed glass door complemented by linen curtains. This softly defines the transition between public and private zones, ensuring visual transparency and a sense of spatial continuity.

By preserving the building's inherent structural aesthetics—such as the soaring exposed beam ceilings, steel trusses, and large industrial-style windows—and infusing a simple, refined design language, Lawless & Meyerson have created a home that respects the past while embracing the present.
