Febrero Studio &
Nestled in Madrid's chic Chamartín neighborhood, this duplex penthouse within a 1960s building has been transformed into a poetic sanctuary for a young couple and their two children.
Febrero Studio restored the building's original essence by peeling away excessive compartmentalization from previous renovations. Lead designer Mercedes Gonzalez Ballesteros explains: "We shared a precious consensus with our clients – preserving architectural DNA through restrained interventions, achieving seamless aesthetic continuity between communal areas and private spaces with neutral tones and contemporary design language."
The team removed segmented structures from earlier modifications, dismantling ornate moldings, bricked-up windows, and a pseudo-fireplace to revive the building's inherent spatial rhythm.
A minimalist approach guides the restoration. The entryway's sculptural white staircase commands visual focus, while wood-clad invisible doors dissolve spatial boundaries. Lush terraces and steps create transitional "white wood box" zones, extending public area aesthetics into private domains.
The floating staircase, coated in matte white finish mirroring the building facade, transforms a confined stairwell into a luminous atrium. This architectural pivot overcomes pipeline constraints while enabling visual dialogue between levels.
Micro-cement floors and oak wood planks form the base, accented with travertine stone in key areas. Material continuity blurs boundaries between new interventions and original architecture, maintaining aesthetic coherence from public corridors to private spaces.
The upper level defies conventional zoning. A multifunctional hub centered around a bookshelf-integrated kitchenette combines workspace, compact gym, foosball area, and fireplace lounge, ingeniously navigating structural and pipeline limitations.
In the frosted glass-enclosed study, a floating desk designed by the studio hangs weightlessly. "This imaginative volumetric space has become a shared favorite between us and the homeowners," the designer emphasizes.
Original columns naturally demarcate space. The main living area channels Madrid sunlight indoors through vintage foosball tables, lighting fixtures by Chinese artist Mario Tsai, and Zara Home chairs curated for relaxed sophistication.
Three bedrooms align along the building's axis. The master suite boasts an en-suite bathroom and private terrace, while children's rooms feature adaptable partitions for future flexibility.
Both bathrooms continue the concrete-textured walls with custom floating fixtures. As Madrid sunlight filters through 1960s steel window grilles onto terrace foliage, the space orchestrates a gentle dialogue between past and future. Febrero Studio's restrained design grants the architecture timeless vitality.
