Hidden deep within the woods of Lake Tahoe, California, this Donald Judd-inspired home stands strong amongst the pines.
As the owner of this residential building and CEO of publicly traded cloud computing software company Five9: Rowan Trollope, he knows a thing or two about technology. Considering he's a character who creates cutting-edge technology, one might think his new home in Lake Tahoe would look like something out of The Jetsons, but for a cartoon analogy, the 50-year-old entrepreneur's home is more aptly compared to The Flintstones.
‘In general, we've really stayed away from technology in our home,’ admits Rowan Trollope; instead, he, his wife Stephanie, and their two children have tried to create a space that blurs the lines between indoor and outdoor living, ’We want our home to be We wanted our home not to be on the land, but to blend in with the land,’ says Rowan Trollope. ’That's why it's partly built on the slope of the ground.
This home building is located in Truckee, California (approximately 10 miles from Lake Tahoe), this one acre property was purchased by the Trollope's in 2018 until March 2020 when this home building construction was completed.
To accommodate the Trollope's utopian vision, Rowan Trollope turned to California-based Faulkner Architects. Greg Faulkner, the firm's founder, explains, ‘The differences in material configurations inside and outside the building are minimal, and I wanted to evoke the feeling of travelling in the outdoors, the spirit of escapism and discovery that rises when arriving at a unique place, and that these feelings are essential in connecting with a space.’
A wood-burning fireplace imported from Cornwall, England, steals the show in the living room, which is complemented by a fabric lounge chair with saddle-leather arms by Vitra and a sofa made from Kvadrat Arflex wool. Perhaps the only real technology present in this room is the television, which retracts into a customised cabinet that sits along the wall.
If connecting with the space is important then that means finding the right interior designer is vital, which is why Rowan Trollope brought in San Francisco based interior designer Nicole Hollis, the two had previously worked together in another of Rowan Trollope's homes and developed a real friendship in the process.
‘Not only have we become very close friends, but our children have become good friends as well’ says Nicole Hollis ’He's the CEO of a large company and I'm an interior designer. We live in two different worlds, but it's our backgrounds that really bring us together’.
Rowan Trollope, on the other hand, shares that ‘Nicole Hollis and I share a sense of starting from nothing’.Rowan Trollope, like Nicole Hollis, started working without graduating from college, and Rowan Trollope goes on to Rowan Trollope continues ‘But it's not just our shared backstory, I fell in love with architecture and interior design through Nicole Hollis’ vision’.
Whilst the courtyard is encased in glass, it is certainly not a fish tank. The yard is open and becomes an extension of the interior space, making it ideal for indoor-outdoor living, with Pendleton wool blankets used on colder days.
‘For anyone who steps into this home, they will immediately feel a lot of inspiration from Donald Judd’, says Nicole Hollis. This refers to the sleek minimalism prevalent throughout the space, but it's clear that the team and homeowners were looking for more than just a Donald Judd-esque vibe. ‘The home is built around a central courtyard that is partially covered by a cantilevered roof,’ explains Nicole Hollis ’With all four windows surrounding the internal courtyard and the firelight from the campfire pit illuminating the entire house, the space feels like a camping site like a campsite.’
The home is as much about escaping the stresses of city life as it is about creating memories of growing up in a new environment.
‘We really wanted to spend more time with the kids and get them excited about the outdoors’ says Rowan Trollope ’Here we are just steps away from the ski lifts and we can ski in the house or leave to go fishing, hiking or cross-country. I think it's very important for kids to experience nature, and for Stephanie and I to be there for them as they explore the beauty of the natural world’.
Nicole Hollis explains ‘We intentionally didn't do lighting that hung over the island or kitchen table. We kept it minimal’.The Trollope's kitchen includes lacquered oak stools by E15 and worktops and black splashbacks in brushed Cambrian black granite by Da Vinci Marble, and the ceiling is boarded in raw sugar pine by Jim Morrison Construction.
The pantry includes a solid oak step ladder by Karl Malmvall and cabinets and shelves in bleached white oak finish with some woodwork by Westgate Hardwoods.
Rowan Trollope and his family have fallen in love with their home here. ‘When I look around the space, there are stone floors as well as concrete walls, it all seems very industrial’ says Rowan Trollope ’But when the kids come running in from outside, covered in snow, the dog jumping up and down, and mud everywhere, it all seems very natural, and that makes us feel so livable here.’
In the den, a custom sleeper sofa by Kroll Furniture is covered in an indigo outdoor fabric by Silver State Textiles.A custom navy wool rug by Pampa adds mood to the space. Bunk beds for the kids are covered with a wool striped blanket from Pendleton, while the floor is covered with a flat-weave wool-cotton blend rug from CB2. In the guest room, EQ3's ivory and grey wool shag rug can be found, as well as a Room & Board queen-size bed frame upholstered in dark grey fabric, with an oak bench and Denver Modern leather seat cushions at the foot of the bed.
The 3,587 square foot home was built with privacy in mind, and despite the fact that there are a number of houses built around it, the Trollope family feel as if they own the forest, due in no small part to the clever design of the all-glass inner courtyard. ‘I have a habit of going outside in the morning to have a cup of coffee in the courtyard, and if it's cold I'll build a fire to keep me warm’ says Rowan Trollope ’And because of the design, you really feel like you're alone in nature. When you look up, all you see are towering trees and ski slopes. Although we are surrounded by neighbours, we would never know it’.
