Design studio La Folie was commissioned by a young couple to renovate a small flat in a historic building in Warsaw, Poland. La Folie artfully complemented the home's period and history with modernist and classic French elements, a balancing act that reflects the owners' unique taste in design.

The flat is furnished with bespoke furniture designed specifically for the project by La Folie's design team, as well as a selection of carefully chosen vintage objects and on-site murals by local artists. The flat resembles a jewel of bespoke sophistication, exquisite detailing and nostalgic gestures.

Within the limited space of the flat, La Folie's head designer Natalia Malarska has adopted an open-plan layout. The main space houses the living area, dining and kitchen area and the bedroom, the latter discreetly divided by an Art Deco style metal decorative door, with a small study and bathroom completing the flat's overall amenities.

With three tall windows and high ceilings and white walls throughout, the living room/bedroom is bright and airy, but also full of warmth, thanks to the space's rustic palette of browns, caramels and tans and a splash of juniper green throughout.

Echoing the circular shape of the bed and the metal door, an arched niche frames the bed, and an exotic mural painted by a local artist serves as a vibrant focal point in an otherwise undecorated space. A pair of lanterns, originally designed in Taiwan, China, hang on either side of the bed, complementing the classicist mood theme and drawing further attention to the mural.

Enhancing the flat's unique character, the lanterns are part of a collection of vintage fixtures handpicked by Malarska from online auction houses and specialist shops, as is the bespoke bed, which features an Art Deco headboard covered in hand-woven fabrics from French brand Pierre Frey.

The restored herringbone parquet flooring and ornate stucco flying buttresses honestly recreate the home's architectural history and convey a sense of classically elegant ambience, while the bespoke skirting boards, doors and kitchen cabinets are painted in a turquoise green, adding a modernist touch to the whole space in addition to the vintage.

Adding to the flat's classicist vibe, the rounded surfaces of the custom kitchen island add decorative objects - clad in elegant wood, fabric and rattan, with brass detailing and brushed granite tops in green tones and pink hues - that also reflect La Folie's classically inspired aesthetic and attention to detail.

In the study, a bespoke folding desk designed to fit the compact space is paired with Japanese-themed wallpaper, also by Pierre Frey, while the windowless bathroom receives natural light through the introduction of an opening fitted with fluted glass.
