For a designer, there's nothing more exciting than a blank canvas. For product designer and interior designer Nicholas Obeid, there's no better opportunity to start from scratch than in a historic building with 16-foot ceilings, soaring windows and stark white walls in New York's SOHO business district, where he later built a 2,800-square-foot loft.
However, there is also a case for being too blank. Commissioned by a couple working in finance, the biggest challenge was the need to ensure that the flat wasn't an empty space, as well as the lack of pre-existing architectural details (apart from a lone cherub-covered stone fireplace) and the desire for the loft to feel like a home, rather than a warehouse or furniture showroom.
Nicholas Obeid worked with design firm EQPT Residences to provide a counterpart to the design project, with the first solution being to condition the large combined kitchen, living and dining space with appropriately scaled products, which included a 105-inch bespoke sofa and a 50-inch by 50-inch bespoke cocktail table.
Nicholas Obeid talks about ‘combinations with heart’, here including one-of-a-kind vintage pieces and works of art. In the living room space, he brought fluidity to the layout with soft curves, such as the folding screen by Alvar Aalto in the corner and the red leather chairs by Tobia and Afra Scarpa for B&B Italia.Nicholas Obeid added the work of Brooklyn potter Natalie Weinberger and sculptor Paul Morehouse, who made the sculptures on the fireplace mantel. Meanwhile, the clients brought in some of their own work, including Picasso's lithographs seen in the living room.
Nicholas Obeid says the oversized furniture creates a more intimate field. Within the same room, Nicholas Obeid created separate seating areas bounded by carpet to help fill empty spaces and create different spaces for relaxation.Nicholas Obeid explains, ‘It also helps my clients when they have a cocktail party at home to have different areas for different kinds of mingling. ’
Nicholas Obeid worked at Jonathan Adler's firm for seven years before starting his own studio in 2018 and creating a wonderful range of design work, but not just interior design, but artwork, product design and more.
The same strategy applies to the dining space, which features striking floor-to-ceiling windows. The bespoke smoked oak dining table designed by Nicholas Obeid anchors the room with its massive dimensions.Nicholas Obeid says: ‘It feels organic, a little soft and curvy’. A set of leather-woven Casamidy dining chairs add lightness to the space, and as a surprise, they were made in the Mexican town where the client got married.
In other spaces in the loft, such as the bedroom, Nicholas Obeid has sourced artwork from La Pera Projects, with carefully selected pieces by established and emerging artists. Other objects were designed by Nicholas Obeid himself, including a floor lamp in the adjoining home office, which came from his collaboration at CB2.
About the whole design, Nicholas Obeid says: ‘My goal was to make such a large space feel more like a cosy home, so that my mission was accomplished.’
