This flat in Pudong, Shanghai is about 220 square-meter, which is not small. However, with the suggested floor plan given by the sales office, the public space of the living room and dining room is reduced to a small size to increase the functional area of the bedrooms, which makes it look like a 100-square-meter flat. Nevertheless, from the very beginning, the owner wanted his home to have a sense of "emptiness", which formed the initial motivation of the design.

After releasing the bedroom space and expanding the public space, the design begins with an imagined center of the house. Around the center, three long cabinets are installed, defining several zones such as the entrance, kitchen-dining zone, living room, guest bedroom and bathroom, and master bedroom. In the end, the center becomes a hub space, an existence of emptiness, an undefined void.

The three cabinets integrate the functions of console cabinet, bathroom cabinet, kitchen cabinet, TV cabinet. In order to make the public area appear more transparent and empty, these cabinets are designed as floating objects which do not touch the ceiling or the floor (except for the kitchen cabinets that are put to the floor for functional reasons). As a result, the ceiling and floor is continuous through the public area, and the overall space appears emptier. The dark wooden veneer adds the heaviness to the cabinet which contrasts with its floating gesture.

Except for the three black cabinets, the materials in the whole flat pursue a natural and rustic feeling, mainly in natural wood color, white and beige. Fine craftsmanship can be seen in the details of extra-large panels of sintered stone floor, frameless doors and flush finished skirtings. In this way, minimalism is not a budget-saving strategy, as is quite common in the market, but a pursued design aesthetics. The formal logic of the bedroom space is consistent with the common area. Moreover, the linen fabric is introduced to add warmth. Altogether, the design pursues the feeling of rustic and natural, which is our understanding of the "poetic dwelling" coined by Martin Heidegger.
