A 1930s building in Powisle, a riverside district of Poland's capital, Warsaw, which was named one of Europe's top 10 coolest neighbourhoods by The Guardian last year, this sophisticated flat balances the ambience with its art of neo-classical, mid-century and modern elements, and complements the overall ethos of the district.

Completely renovated by Marta Chrapka of Polish interior design firm Colombe Design Studio for a writer and his wife, the residence is a fine example of bespoke furnishings, exquisite craftsmanship and unique detailing, and is a testament to the team's overall control of the interior design.

Faced with an unsatisfactory renovation that had previously abused the architectural heritage, Marta Chrapka decided to begin restoring the flat to its former elegance. The décor, wall finishes, herringbone oak floors and large windows have been carefully and painstakingly refurbished to their original state, in stark contrast to the layout of the previous flat, which was completely refurbished and reconfigured.

The living room is a combination of a minimalist white sofa, a late restored mid-century coffee table, a vintage gold and yellow lamp and a Moroccan carpet purchased in Marrakech.Colombe Design Studio created a mid-century style teak cabinet, which was transformed into a marble and brass console table at the other end of the room, which has been nicknamed the ‘Worm Cabinet’ due to the fact that it needed to follow the the room's tangential perimeter, a spatial shape the team had to contend with when designing the entire flat in this building.

An upholstered armchair was also custom-designed by Colombe Design Studio, as were the walnut dining table and kitchen cabinets, whose walnut-white circle motif was inspired by the sideboard of Austrian modernist architect and designer Josef Frank. Josef Frank's dining chairs are from Svensk Tenn, while a modernist copper chandelier from Gubi completes the living area.

What was once a separate space is now reconstituted as an open-plan living space, with the interior housing the kitchen, living room and dining room; the former kitchen now serves as a study as well as a guest room, and the hallway and bedrooms make up the remaining rooms of the flat.

Between the corridor and the private quarters, a bespoke double door carved from solid walnut steals the show with its Cracow-inspired geometric design.

However, what really makes the flat's décor stand out is Colombe Design Studio's obsessive attention to detail. Not only did the team go to great lengths in selecting or designing every interior element, from the flooring, doors and wardrobes, to the furniture, door handles, bedspreads and lampshades, they also manufacture all the bespoke designs in the studio's carpentry, upholstery and metalwork workshops, and even the antique and vintage furniture that has been chosen is restored in-house using period-specific materials.

Marta Chrapka eschews the use of too many decorative objects, relying instead on the details of these bespoke and vintage furnishings to add colour to an otherwise understated interior. As such, soft shades of white and beige punctuate the interior with rust, red brick and gold, and natural wood is also used to add to the warmth of the space.

Marta Chrapka

In the bedroom, Chrapka designed a built-in wood-panelled bed and cabinet to soften the room's angular floor.

A similar design can be found in the study/guest room, which was painted a darker grey-brown, in this case creating a niche for the vintage Noel bed, which the designer paired with a floral wallpaper designed by William Morris, and ultimately is just another example of the interior designer's savvy sense of function and aesthetics.
